The recently unveiled new AirPods have been redesigned to look more like the Pro Series models. In addition, Apple’s 3rd generation earbuds feature adaptive equalizer, spatial audio and can run for up to 6 hours on a standalone basis. The form factor hasn’t changed, and the AirPods remain earbuds, but in a new design with shorter ‘legs’ like the Pro line models. In contrast, there will be no rubber inserts. The design of the headphones is such that they almost perfectly fit the shape of the user’s earlobes, adapting to it. The “anatomical” design allows for better rejection of external noise and, as a result, better sound quality.

The new AirPods have improved and are now equipped with H1, a high performance amplifier with a wide dynamic range allowing for clear high notes and deep bass. The earphone’s microphone is covered by a special acoustic mesh that effectively muffles wind noises and enables clear voice reproduction during calls. The new AirPods feature Apple’s proprietary Spatial Audio technology for surround sound with head position dynamics control, and Adaptive EQ, an acoustic equalizer like the Pro model that adapts sound to the individual user.

The new generation of headphones is protected against the effects of moisture and perspiration. Both the AirPods themselves and their charging case have a high IPX4 rating.

Battery life

According to Apple representatives, the new headphones can work without recharging for a maximum of 6 hours, and if you use the case with charger included, the operating time is extended to 30 hours. Plus, 5 minutes of quick charging time is enough to add another hour.

Other standout features include support for the AAC ELD codec and the ability to recharge the case using the MagSafe magnetic charger. A special sensor detects skin-to-skin contact, and the system can detect whether the headphone is in the ear, on a surface or in the pocket. As soon as the user removes the AirPods from their ears, the sound stops playing right away.

Connecting the headphones

The headphones automatically connect to any Apple-branded device, with a one-click setup and audio can be streamed to two pairs of AirPods, including Max and Pro models, from different devices – Apple TV, iPod touch, iPad or iPhone.

For the United States, the recommended price for the new wireless headphones is $179. It is possible to order them online. Meanwhile, the AirPods of the past 2nd generation also remain on sale at a discounted price of $129.
